Independent Ireland Leader Michael Collins TD has welcomed President Donald Trump’s decision to remove US tariffs on Irish whiskey, describing it as “fantastic news” for whiskey producers across Ireland and a major boost for one of Ireland’s most successful indigenous industries.
Deputy Collins said the decision was particularly welcome for Cork, which has a long and proud tradition of whiskey production and is home to producers whose products are enjoyed around the world.
“This is fantastic news for whiskey producers in Cork and right across Ireland,” the Cork West TD said.
“I wholeheartedly welcome the decision to remove the tariffs on Irish whiskey. The United States is an enormously important market for Irish whiskey, and removing these tariffs will give our producers greater certainty and a much better opportunity to compete.”
“Cork has a fantastic whiskey industry, with a proud tradition of production and some outstanding businesses producing a world-class product,” he added.
“These are Irish companies employing Irish people and generating valuable economic activity in our communities. They should be supported in growing their businesses and expanding into international markets.”
“I have consistently raised concerns about the impact tariffs can have on Irish businesses and exporters. Additional tariffs mean additional costs, uncertainty and pressure on businesses that are already working hard to compete internationally.”
“Irish whiskey is one of our great indigenous export success stories. We should be doing everything possible to support the people and businesses behind that success.”

US President Donald Trump has said that his announcement to remove tariffs on Irish whiskey will not apply across the EU. His decision means that, in common with British and Scottish whisky, Irish whiskey will enter the US tariff-free.
