CNN Poll: Most Americans ‘concerned’ or ‘scared’ for future under Biden

The impact of Covid measures, rocketing gas prices, and accelerating inflation are taking a toll on Americans’ morale in the second year of Joe Biden’s presidency. That’s according to a recent poll carried out by news outlet, CNN.

CNN asked viewers about their outlook in order “to get a sense about how things are going in the U.S.,” according to CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin. The poll, conducted by SSRS, found that Americans across political lines are united in their “generally negative feelings” about the US and its policies, with Democrats “particularly unlikely” to express political enthusiasm.

65% of Americans polled said they are concerned about how things are going in the U.S. Only 4% say they are excited and 10% say they are optimistic about the way things are going in the country – with 21% (one in five) saying they’re ‘scared’.

Less than one-quarter, 23%, call themselves “fired up” about politics, with 53% describing themselves as burned out. And roughly one-third, 32%, say they feel their side is currently losing more than winning in politics, with just 9% feeling that they’re mostly on the winning side.

According to the poll, Democrats are less likely to feel fired up than Republicans (25% vs. 33%) and more likely to say their side is losing (43% vs. 31%).

Some commentators have noted that the mood of the country is ‘turning gloomier,’ even though the Biden administration had pledged to “end” Covid by now, and return the nation to a sense of normalcy. Even though the ‘non-stop barrage’ of negative news surrounding the Trump administration has come to an end, polls from CNN and others still indicate a sense of pessimism.

According to the Real Clear Politics’ average of polls, a right direction/wrong track sentiment is starting to return to early Covid pandemic levels.

Only 24.7 percent feel that the nation is heading in the “right direction” while 68.1 percent believe it is heading on the “wrong track,” according to the news website and polling data aggregator.

Even worse for the Biden administration, these numbers are reflected in Biden’s approval ratings. According to Fox News, Biden’s poor performance is starting to see the Democratic Party suffer an exodus of Hispanic voters who would have been long-term supporters of the Party.

“President Biden’s approval rating among Hispanic Americans has plummeted to 26%, according to a poll from Quinnipiac University,” Fox News reported last week.

“Biden is less popular among Hispanics than any other demographic, including age and gender, the poll found,” the report added. “The same Quinnipiac poll conducted last year put Hispanic support for Biden at 55%.”

The CNN poll was conducted by SSRS on 12 May and 13 May among a random national sample of 1,000 adults surveyed by text message. Participants were recruited using probability-based methods.
