Not content to base their argument about the “gendered impacts of climate breakdown” on one misleading statistic that’s already been debunked, Trócaire and ActionAid, in their recently released report on Ireland’s role in the global fossil fuel industry, have decided that a second entirely dodgy statistic was in order: “80% of those displaced by the climate crisis are women”.
I wrote yesterday about the claim contained in last week’s report – titled, The hidden truth: Ireland’s role in the global fossil fuel industry – that “women are 14x more likely to die in climate related disasters than men”. Turns out, despite Trócaire and ActionAid uncritically publishing it and some mainstream media outlets uncritically platforming the report, that it doesn’t appear to be quite true.
