Today’s hot temperatures could see Ireland record the hottest June day on record, with Met Éireann forecasting temperatures to soar to 33C today.
Ireland’s record June temperature of 33.3C was recorded at Kilkenny Castle back in 1887 – with today’s heat having the potential to break that record, according to Met Éireann.
“There is a potential for the record to be challenged but it’s not in any way certain that it’s going to be broken,” meteorologist Gerry Murphy said this morning.
The weather service said that temperatures will continue to climb throughout the week into the high 20s and even rising to 30C or higher by Thursday.
It said that it will also be mild and humid, which will make for some uncomfortable conditions, especially at night, with temperatures likely to remain above 15 degrees.
Overnight temperatures on Thursday are expected to stay at 20C or above, meaning Ireland could experience another“tropical night.”
Much of Europe is currently experiencing a heatwave, causing temperatures of 40 degrees or higher. A plume of extremely hot air from Europe moving towards Ireland has brought with it hot and humid conditions, making for what Met Éireann has described as “very uncomfortable conditions.”
The heatwave, however, will end tomorrow, Friday, with a seven degree drop in temperature expected as an Atlantic front is to bring cloudy and wetter conditions next week.
Current public safety guidance has advised people to stay in the shade; avoid going out or partaking in strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day; drink plenty of fluids; apply UVA and UVB sunscreen to skin that is not covered, factor 30+ for adults and 50+ for children.
