Police in the North have updated the nationality of the man arrested over a “horror” attempted murder last night from Somalian to Sudanese.
In a statement this lunchtime, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said:
“We understand there are strong community concerns after last night’s shocking attempted murder in north Belfast. We are aware of inaccurate online posts regarding the victim’s condition. We can confirm that the injured man remains in a serious condition in hospital.
“As our investigation has progressed, we can also confirm that the man in custody is Sudanese and not Somalian, as initially believed.
“This is a fast-time investigation and we will continue to provide further updates to the public in due course,” the force added.
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has called the incident “sickening,” saying in a statement that he will have “absolutely no tolerance for abhorrent scenes of violence like this on our streets”.
“The horrific attack in Belfast last night is sickening,” said the Prime Minister.
“My thoughts are first and foremost with the victim, and I thank the first responders, including members of the public who intervened.”
