Sean Kyne’s win in the recent bye-election in Galway West will be greeted with understandable satisfaction in Fine Gael circles. A seat was won. The party organisation and a strong candidate delivered. The result will inevitably be presented as evidence that voters are broadly content with the direction the country is going in.
That conclusion would be a mistake.
