There are no indications that the Irish government has begun preparing for the potential launch of free trade talks between the UK and the Mercosur bloc of South American countries, following comments by UK trade minister Sir Chris Bryant last week suggesting discussions may be under consideration.
Bryant made the remarks during a visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, telling journalists that the EU’s move to secure a free trade agreement with Mercosur had increased the likelihood of the UK pursuing a similar deal, as British goods were now at a competitive disadvantage.
