A man has appeared at Dublin District Court charged with a fatal assault on an English tourist in Dublin’s Temple Bar last August.
Daragh O’Brien (22) of Beechfield Heights, Clonee, Dublin 15, was initially charged with assault causing harm after the incident, which took place on the 21st of August last.
The accused was previously released on conditional bail after an initial hearing, where it was argued that he is no longer welcome at his family home.
During today’s short hearing, O’Brien, who was dressed in a blue coloured tracksuit, spoke only to confirm his name and to communicate with his solicitor, Ms Holly Lahare.
Garda Colin Coyne Delaney of Pearse Street station told Judge Gerard Hughes that the State wished to withdraw the charge of assault causing harm and update it to one of murder.
The victim, Londoner Anthony Herron (41), pictured above, spent a period of two months in hospital after the assault before passing away last October after being transferred back to the UK.
O’Brien allegedly kicked the deceased man in the head after a verbal altercation on the date in question.
It is further alleged that he delivered more kicks to the deceased, who is survived by his wife (who was expecting a child at the time of his death) and a three-year-old son.
