Just imagine RTÉ’s Christmas programme planning meeting last autumn with the schedulers wanting to put on something “transgressive” and “daring” over the festive season. What’s left that might possibly enrage what remains of the Catholic Ireland?
Isn’t that what Ireland’s television licence-payers expect these days? Something tendentiously provocative yet also mainstream, achieving a fusion that will probably offend yet which will be nonetheless protected within the new dogmas? The “Gays for Gaza” as a headline act pretty much stole the multicultural show a couple of years ago, but was there nothing on those lines that would provoke yet could simultaneously claim to be perfectly innocent?
