Since midnight, there are Status Yellow snow and ice warnings in place for 11 counties in the Republic of Ireland across the country’s north and northeast of the country, including Donegal, Sligo, Monaghan, Cavan and Leitrim.
An additional warning has also been issued by the UK’s Met Office for all 6 counties of Northern Ireland until noon today.
“Wintry showers on Tuesday night into Wednesday will bring some icy patches and lying snow in places, leading to possible travel delays,” the UK office said.
“Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.
“Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths. Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces [expected].”
Hail, sleet, ice and snow are forecast, with some snow anticipated in higher areas, with Met Éireann warning of hazardous conditions for travellers.
“Chilly today with sunshine and showers, some turning wintery with hail, sleet and possibly snow, but these will be mainly over higher ground in the north and northwest,” the agency said in a statement.
“Highest temperatures of just 3 to 7 degrees, but it will feel even cooler with an added wind chill from moderate to fresh northerly winds, stronger along exposed coasts.”
Chilly nights are ahead as temperatures dip to -3°C in spots, sparking widespread frost and ice across Ireland for the coming evenings.
Met Éireann’s Rebecca Cantwell issued a heads-up earlier this week, urging people to layer up against the cold and factor in additional time for scraping ice off windscreens in the mornings. However, she noted a shift back to more moderate weather by Friday according to projections.
