A lot of weird ideological criticisms are being levelled at Connolly by the same media class who’ve spent fourteen years telling us Michael D. Higgins is a national treasure, which I personally find baffling.
For weeks now we’ve been bombarded with warnings that Catherine Connolly will be a radical, dangerous, unprecedented departure in the Áras. The same media and political class that spent fourteen years polishing Michael D. Higgins’ halo and treating him like a secular Pope suddenly want us to believe that Connolly is an off-the-wall Socialist nutjob who will insult half the planet and tank our reputation abroad.
