It fell yesterday to the Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohoe, to ride to the defence of the moderately embattled Tánaiste amid the continuing anger and public outrage in the aftermath of the death of Harvey Morisson Sherratt.
The finance minister is a highly capable politician, and an excellent communicator. It should probably therefore be notable just how weak his defence of his boss the Tánaiste was. I am not suggesting here a lack of effort on the Minister’s behalf: It is simply that he is playing with a very weak hand.
