The politically disillusioned European will tell you that the continent’s elites never tire of delivering reminders that the only legitimate political preferences are, number one, in favour of the status quo, and number two, anything to the left of it.
That is because, they’ll say, for the more-or-less politically content, anything to the right of the status quo, however mildly, risks taking on an anti-democratic, populist, or positively autocratic flavour. Never mind the fact that there appears to be an awful lot more viewpoint diversity on the right than on the left, to condone even the holding of such views is seen as but a step away from flirting with fascism.
