The Irish Prison Service has announced that 138 prisoners will be granted temporary release this Christmas under the Criminal Justice Act 1960.
The measure, which takes place annually, allows eligible inmates nearing the end of their sentences to spend a limited time outside prison.
“Many of the prisoners being released are nearing the end of their sentences,” the Irish Prison Service said in a statement, adding that “the overriding concern when considering the applications is the safety of the public.”
Prisoners granted temporary release this Christmas will be assessed on several factors beyond compassionate and humane grounds, prison authorities confirmed. These include the severity of their offence, the portion of their sentence already served, their behaviour in custody, their criminal history, and their record during any prior temporary releases.
Release periods will range from a few hours, to a maximum of seven nights, and will be governed by strict conditions. Any breaches could see offenders swiftly returned to custody by Gardaí.
“The sensitivities of victims are an issue that has also been taken into account. Additional
specific conditions will also apply in relation to victim cases,” the Service added.
“Furthermore all registered victims with the Irish Prison Service Victim Liaison Service will be
informed in the cases where prisoners are receiving Christmas Temporary Release.”
