Sinn Féin’s attempt to claim that they are now opposing the proposed hate speech bill because they always harboured reservations about it and because their amendments were rejected simply does not stand up to examination.
Not only did every single Sinn Féin TD who was present when the legislation was approved by Dáil Éireann on April 26 last year vote to approve the measure, but their amendments in general were designed not to ameliorate the impact of the Bill on free speech, but to broaden its scope.
