100% increase in people summonsed for failure to pay TV Licence Fee

Minister Catherine Martin has confirmed that An Post applied to the courts for 14,915 summonses for failure to pay for a TV Licence in 2022.

The Green Party Minister also confirmed that the number of cases heard in court in 2022 was 9,610.

The information was provided to Sinn Fein TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh in written parliamentary reply.

Minister Martin noted that while Part 9 of the Broadcasting Act, 2009 makes provision for the administration of the TV licence fee system, An Post makes every effort to reduce evasion and issues a number of reminders to evaders.

Prosecution through the courts is a last resort, she said.

The figure of 14,915 summonses is almost a 100 per cent increase in the number of summonses applied for in 2021 (7,507).

The number of cases heard in court in 2021 on foot of a summons was 4,328.
