The response to the latest outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo appears to have gone up several degrees since the weekend. Most notably with the declaration by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Sunday of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
A PHEIC declaration is a rare event and apart from ongoing alerts over Monkeypox and Poliovirus, the last was the Covid Panic which was in place between January 2020 and May 2023. The emergency is so far confined to the DRC and Uganda and there are no recommendations to close borders.
