An 84-year-old grandfather from Tralee, Co Kerry, has passed his driving test with flying colours, with his delighted driving instructor describing him as “an inspiration”.
“Not often I am left speechless but what an inspiration,” his proud instructor, Maria, of Ladybird Driving School in Tralee, wrote in a Facebook post dedicated to Bryan earlier this week.
“Bryan is 84 years young and decided he wanted to pass his driving test”, she said. “He did his 12 EDT lessons with Maria in Tralee, and went on to pass his test [for the] first time this week”.
“Bryan is a total inspiration […] he was so determined from lesson 1 that he was going to pass his test. Whatever we did on the lesson Bryan went away and put into practise,” his instructor said.
“They say practice makes perfect… it certainly does as Bryan passed his test first attempt today in Tralee with flying colours”.
His instructor admitted she would miss seeing Bryan, adding: “I am going to miss our lessons. Congratulations and well done”.
Online, people expressed their delight at hearing the news, with one person saying: “This made me smile” as people commended the pensioner as “brilliant”.
Ladybird Driving School in nearby Killarney shared the fantastic news on social media, saying it was a clear example that “you’re never too old to follow your dreams”.
Reporting on the story, local paper Kerry’s Eye said Bryan “cried tears of joy” on passing his test. The new driver said he’s now excited to get on the road and start bringing his grandchildren to school in Tralee.
Many people took to social media to congratulate driving instructor Maria, describing her pupil’s success as “a great achievement” for both.
