Yesterday was St Bridget’s Day and social media was chock-a-block with memes and videos and stories celebrating one of Ireland’s best known historical figures and her legacy.
But if you missed this absolutely brilliant video of two dotes in Leitrim making very special deliveries of their St Brigid’s crosses then you’re in for a treat.
From the bright red trailer to the sheer happiness of the young stars of the production to the top-notch narration and delivery and the gorgeous scenery, the whole thing is a delight from start to finish.
Some other traditions around St Brigid are also explored as is a trip to a holy well named in her honour. Its all beautifully shot in bright winter sunshine and features a cracking tune from musician and composer Caitlín Nic Ghabhann.
Sit back and enjoy!
Edwina Guckian, dancer and folklorist, whose family are central to the video, has also authored a new book for children, Sparks from the Flagstones, which is packed with Irish Folk traditions and calendar customs, all beautifully illustrated by Andrea Rossi and can be purchased here.
