Warren Donohoe: Hero who first pulled Dublin knife attacker from child, wife reveals

A Wicklow man is being praised as the hero who first pulled the knife attacker from a child outside Gaelscoil Choláiste Mhuire school during Thursday’s shocking attack in central Dublin, after his wife posted his story on social media.

Warren Donohoe, from Baltinglass in Wicklow, was visiting Dublin for the day with his family, for his daughter Abigail’s birthday, when they witnessed the terrifying attack, and ran to help, she said.

Heroic Warren went to tackle the attacker, while Abigail, who was celebrating her 11th birthday, rushed to the Rotunda hospital to get help, the Irish Mirror reports.

In a social media post, Warren’s wife Stacey said that her husband had struggled with the man, and pulled him away from the children being attacked, while Brazilian man Caio Benicio, also appeared at the scene and hit the attacker with his helmet.

In interviews given to the media, Mr Benicio said he dismounted his bike when he saw the little girl being attacked and used his helmet to hit the attacker. There have been calls to give the freedom of the city to the Deliveroo driver.

Warren and his daughter Abigail

Mr Donohoe’s wife has shared images of her husband’s torn Adidas jumper, writing alongside the post that her children remain traumatised from seeing the violent incident, as she described it as “the worst day” of her life, adding: “I can’t get the sight out of my head.”

“If Warren and Alan and the man on the bike were not there, all of [those] children would have been killed. I will never get the image out of my head,” Stacey Power Donohoe added. She said in a social media post that despite the trauma inflicted by the incident, she believes the family found themselves “there for a reason.”

Praise and gratitude has poured in for Mr Donohoe online, with hundreds of people expressing well wishes and thanking the dad for his bravery.

“We need a lot more men like Warren,” one person posted on social media, while someone else added: “Thankfully there were many heroes yesterday.”

“Thanks so much to your brave husband. He deserves just as much credit,” one lady wrote.

“Your husband deserves the highest bravery award,” one comment read. “Well done Warren, we need a lot more men like you in this world,” another female user said.

Speaking to Dublin Live, Stacey detailed how the harrowing scenes unfolded on Thursday afternoon, explaining: “I saw what looked like a woman and a man fighting across the road. And I said to the kids, come close and stand beside me.

“And then I just, I saw him just grabbing the child and stabbing her.”

She detailed how she raised the alarm with her husband, continuing: “I screamed. I said, ‘Warren, he’s stabbing her! He’s stabbing the child.’

“And Warren ran straight across the road. He didn’t even think.”

“I was trying to get the baby out of the pram. And my mam’s partner ran across as well. He fell in the middle of the road running, trying to get over to help.

“Warren attacked the man, pulling the man away from the child. And then the Brazilian man came. His bike fell, and he came over.”

She said that while her husband was unharmed, he was “sore all over” and did not speak for the whole day. Meanwhile, her mother’s partner is still in hospital after he fell on the road trying to help, she said.

A Go Fund Me set up for Warren describes him as the “unsung hero of Dublin,” and has so far raised almost €5,000, with people donating in an expression of thanks.

Reports of Warren’s bravery comes as French teenager Alan Loren-Guille (17) has come to the fore as another hero in Thursday’s attack.

The young man was on his way to work as a waiter at Spitalfields restaurant in south central Dublin when he came across the incident outside the Dublin school. The courageous teenager acted quickly to intervene, according to a social media post on his employer, Spitalfields Restaurant in Dublin.

Alan Loren-Guille (C: Spitalfields Restaurant Dublin)

French newspaper Le Figaro reports that French president Emmanuel Macron called him personally to “congratulate him and thank him for his act of bravery which helped save lives and which makes us all proud.”

A spokesman for the president said: “We salute the courage of our compatriot, who helped put an end to the attack perpetrated by an assailant in Dublin yesterday.

“We also send our thoughts to the victims of this attack and their families. We stand with Ireland and the Irish people.”

In a social media tribute to Mr Loren-Guille, the Michelin-starred Spitalfields restaurant, where Alan is a trainee chef, praised the teenager as a “super hero.”

“17 year old super hero Alan Loren-Guille who was one of the brave hero’s that managed to disarm the school children attacker yesterday in Dublin on his way to work. He is one of our brilliant French stagiaires in the kitchen @spitalfields_dublin.

“He noticed something happening as he passed by and selflessly jumped in to stop the attacker and managed to wrestle the knife off him. He was fairly unscathed but for a couple a cuts to his hand and face. Without this act of bravery who knows what else might have happened.

“Our prayers are with the poor children, families and teachers who were affected by this tragedy. Please lookout for one and other. Not all superheroes wear capes,” the Dublin restaurant wrote on social media.

Thank you for producing this article drawing attention to the heroic actions of Warren and Alan.
All kudos as well to Caio . 3 brave men .
But it was wrong that Warren and Alan were written out of the script initially by the MSM. I assume this was an instinctive reflex on their part to try rush a good story out about the heroic actions of a citizen who is an immigrant in order to counteract the non-suppressible story of the unbelievably evil action of a citizen who is also an immigrant.
By all means they should give Caio the credit he deserves but they should not do so at the expense others who deserve credit just to promote a particular narrative. It is unfair and wrong as well as being borderline misinformation and misrepresentation. MSM in Ireland really need to get a grip of themselves and start reporting stories and events , fully , accurately, and objectively and refrain from being guided by agendas and the desire for predetermined outcomes and conclusions.

Yeah, fair play to all them. Only the media would create a hierarchy out of their brave actions.

You’re correct but the problem is it may be too late for that. They’ve been doing it for so long now that they believe their own propaganda.

Had you read the comment by #Eamonn Dowling you would see clearly that it was a section of his comment and #Ar87 was quoting it. How on earth did this become a Muslim agenda? I have not seen one mention of it at all. You are out to make trouble. Go away. You are out of your league.

but the young lad Alan is French so either has multiple citizenship or is fully French and has the right to move freely around the EU,either way none of these people calling for people like him to be throw out or attacked would know the difference or care…he dosen’t fit their agenda in any way either, and the 2/3 are not even Irish(you know white milky catholic good boy’s)

French people generally (exempting the obvious), Hindus, Buddhists, Ukrainians or Brazilians haven’t been carrying out dozens of jihadist knife attacks across Europe in 2023.

I have a nephew a niece and a child of my own that if you were to look at them you would not think they were Irish….should I not fear for their safety right now?when people are rioting and demanding to get rid of the foreigners??again could any of you tell the difference?

No I never said your children weren’t Irish. You said people may not think they are Irish based on their appearance and you were concerned about their safety.

But in the last week 3 Irish children have been violently assaulted and zero children who are foreign or look like they may be foreign and so I think worrying about their safety is unnecessary

I’ll be sure to pass that on to all family members who are not “Irish enough” that when a violent mob chases them down screaming for them to “go back to their own Country” that they have nothing to fear

So if more than one person tackled the knife-man then why did the mainstream media report it like there was only one person tackle the Knife-man ??

Propaganda. Media wants Irish citizens to think we should be grateful for all the immigrants in the country.

If it’s true the MSM are doing that then we are moving into Orwellian territory. That is telling lies in order to shape public opinion in a certain direction. Very concerning

it’s absolutely disgusting of msm to give no credit to Warren when he disarmed and held him there till the Garda arrived he undoubtably saved a lot of lives that day

Did the mainstream media actually choose to highlight the Brazilian man who tackled the knifeman and ignore the Irishman who tackled the knifeman because of a political agenda.
It’s nearly a form of discrimination against an Irish person because he’s not a foreign national which was a better fit for their political agenda.
That is a bizarre state of affairs for the Irish media to be in if it’s true

Well done Maria. Gript belatedly got to this story. I’ve been pushing it on Twitter to Ben and John (no acknowledgement how surprising). Will Gript now do a commentary on behaviour of MSM and pushing the lone Brazilian narrative?

The recent events in Dublin have brought into sharp focus deeper issues underlying public anger. The complexity of the situation demands an open and honest examination of immigration, housing, and political dissatisfaction. By acknowledging and addressing these concerns, Ireland can work towards a more inclusive and cohesive society, where the voices of the people are heard and their needs are met.

Ar87

Indeed, which can happen once certain people stop shouting ‘rascist’ at people for voicing concern at the scale of this immigration.
Unless they do that then….. No cohesive society

Thank you for highlighting this when the rest of the Irish media never mentioned Warren or Alan they made it look like Caio was the only hero an a gofund has raised €354,811.00 for Caio alone. They should all be rewarded for their bravery. Is there any update on how the children and carer are doing?

James Hunt

Because Warren is white and Irish, it’s a possibility he could be charged with a serious assault and for been racist! This that can’t happen? Think again! This country is turning into a multi culti hell hole!

Gavin

Fair play to all 3 of these brave lads. It takes a certain amount of presence of mind to react quickly in a situation like that. I understand the powers that be have put a sour taste on the Brazilian guys efforts but he deserves as much credit as the other 2 heroes. Its not his fault he was used as a pawn in the media’s sick game. All these guys are special people.

alexia abnett

Oh I had no idea! The MSM only spoke about the chap on the bike. And a GoFundMe that has exceeded €100.000!!! Thank you for bringing it to the attention of all that there were, in fact, more than the guy on the bike. We should be so grateful that they all pitched in, in fact, they all risked their lives to save those children and the President should award them medals for bravery! No one gave it a second thought to rush and try and stop the attack, and that shows true humanity. No one thought about the colour or religion of the attacker or the children and carer being attacked, they just did what was going to save lives. God Bless you all for doing the right thing.

Maria Mullins

everyone should buy both these other guys a pint too…it’s actually sad though that only 3 brave men intervened to stop this regardless of the news reportings…this tells you even if your child is being attacked or knifed in the vicinity of hundreds of people, only less than a handful will bother to help

Maria Mullins

actually I want to correct myself here, their carer/teacher was also brave enough to protect those children, not everyone who you entrust your child with would do such a thing and I don’t want to diminish her bravery by not including her…she deserves as much praise as the 3 men

James Gough

Reply to  Maria Mullins

It is a little unfair Mary to say only three brave men In intervened. It depends on the speed at which it happened and how quickly others could get to the spot. I don’t think that there were a crowd on onlookers standing there and just watching the horror unfold.

Maria Mullins

that is why I corrected myself and said their teacher too, other than that I stand by what I said and don’t think it is unfair at all…had I witnessed such a thing unfold I would like to think I would intervene but would I?could I?generally when people witness something horrific they get frozen in shock and fear so it’s very plausible there was a crowd of people “just watching” but that is not of any comfort…

According to a first hand account, women surrounded the attacker to protect him from being lynched until the Gardai ‘could do their duty’.
Waiting in vain for the authorities to ‘do their duty’ and protect Irish people is what has lead to the frustration that erupts in public disorder.

This lady is not telling the truth, the picture she shared on social media of her partners sweatshirt alleging it is a knife cut is a lie. It is cleary a seam tear, which would indicate she saw what was happening with the go fund me for the Brazilian lad, and decided she fancied a cut. A. Why hasn’t her partner stepped forward. B. check

if that was true Caio wouldn’t have had to hit him with a helmet and basically he just committed assault ?

If it was anything or answering anything to do with the eventual case, if it was double-posted, if there were lots of simultaneous comments or if there were links they might get delayed and usually don’t appear at all. There seems to be crappy streamlining as well.

He can be seen walking and running around in this video. Make your own mind up. His hoody doesn’t look torn in the video. Sounds like his Mrs has also been advised by the Gardai to close her Facebook account while information about the case is gathered. Which would make sense if anything for them to get the trauma out of their minds as a family. Would also make sense if they realized the better keep quiet now.

She said in first interview and her FB Post that it was slashed, and she was the far side of the road with a busy Thursday afternoon Parnell Square traffic including plenty of buses in her sightline, nevermind her mam, upset kids and her eldest having run away, and apparently her Dad having fallen in the road.

Wasn’t saying that Warren wasn’t involved somehow, but she’s seen what happened with the Brazilian lad and added a bunch of half-truths to make sure she gets her cut….
