In 2018, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar condemned the use of “dismissive” language such as “male, pale and stale,” saying that it wasn’t “right” to speak about people in such a manner.
The comments were made in the Dáil after then-Labour Party TD Joan Burton asked a question about gender quotas for women, and reducing the alleged gender pay gap. Burton accused Varadkar and his government of pursuing a “male, stale and pale model” during its term of office.
