Having written about population projections and demographics for the past six years, one of the most striking features is the extent to which official estimates have been consistently wrong – sometimes proven to be so before the ink in which they were written was barely dry.
A prime example of this was the September 2019 report by the Central Bank. Looking forward to 2030, and basing itself on the projections that had been published by the Central Statistics Office in 2013, for 2016 – 2046, it forecast that annual net migration would range between 10,000 and 34,000 over the period to 2030.
