South Africa is in the midst of an immigration crisis – which must present a conundrum for those western liberals who regard the issue in simplistic racial terms. For how can black South Africans possibly object to their brothers and sisters from Zimbabwe and further afield sharing the joys of their country?
In response to widespread protests, the South African state launched one of its biggest security operations to police the planned protest that took place on Tuesday, June 30. It was reported that there were more than 900 arrests but even that provides little sense of what appears to have been a chaotic day in all major cities and towns.
