If you’re not yet on the electoral register, you have until 11:59pm tonight, Tuesday October 7th 2025, to apply in time to vote in the upcoming Presidential Election on October 24th 2025.
Applications to be added to the register close at midnight, but people are advised not to leave it until the last minute, as your local authority needs time to process applications and confirm details.
The electoral register is the official list of everyone who is eligible to vote in Ireland. If your name isn’t on it, you won’t be able to vote on polling day.
You can apply or check your registration online at www.checktheregister.ie. The site allows you to:
– Confirm or complete your existing record by providing your PPSN, date of birth, nationality and Eircode
– Update your name or address if they have changed
If you’ve moved house since the last election you voted in, you should update your address details. Those who moved from Dublin to another county must apply with their new local authority through checktheregister.ie, and then contact their old (Dublin) authority to remove their old record.
You can register once you are 16 years old, though you won’t be eligible to actually vote until you turn 18. In order to vote in the Presidential election, you must be an Irish citizen over the age of 18 who is resident in the State full-time.
Registering early means your details will automatically transfer to the live register when you reach voting age.
If you encounter any problems, you can contact your local council directly for advice. Some local authorities may facilitate you by email if time is short.
For most people, registering online only takes a few minutes – but after tonight’s deadline, it will be too late to get on the register for this election, and you will not be able to vote on polling day.
