A serial thief and shoplifter from Dublin with 77 previous convictions has been given just 7 months behind bars.
Eoin Daly, 37, of Augustine Street, Dublin 8, pleaded guilty in Dublin District Court to stealing a pair of €400 designer sunglasses, a €230 coat and four Barbie dolls worth €85, all in separate thefts.
Back in April, Daly reportedly became aggressive with security staff at Toymaster in Dublin city centre after he was confronted about stealing the Barbie dolls, at which point he fled with the toys, the court heard.
Daly reportedly stole a €400 pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses from Arnott’ on Henry Street in March. In April he returned to the same shop and stole a €230 coat and another €400 pair of sunglasses.
Reportedly, the court heard than none of the stolen property in question was recovered.
Daly, who has 77 previous convictions for offences which include theft, was handed a 10-month prison sentence, with 3 months suspended.
In recent weeks Gript reported how a Meath man was given a fully suspended sentence after being convicted of sexual assault.
It was also reported that a care home worker who stole over €3,000 from 83-year-old victim was given a fully-suspended sentence, receiving no jail time.
Additionally, in late October, a man caught with sex abuse videos of babies as young as 2 avoided jail.
Recently Gript asked Justice Minister Helen McEntee about what some see as soft-sentencing in the Irish courts for serious offences. Her response can be viewed below.
