The Irish government is preparing a “contingency plan” for the economy depending on which candidate wins the upcoming US election, according to Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill.
Speaking on RTÉ’s The Week In Politics programme, MacNeill was asked about the potential “impact” that a second Trump presidency might have on areas like Ireland’s corporate tax rate.
“The Irish government will always prepare for the outcome of any U.S. election, and of course, this is no different,” the Fine Gael Minister replied.
“We’ve clearly worked with both Democratic and Republican presidents and politicians in the past, and we will contingency plan.”
She further said that Ireland’s position within the EU-US relationship was “so important for our economy.”
“The US is a significant investor here, but don’t forget that Irish companies are the seventh-largest investor in the U.S., and we create 100,000 jobs there, so, it’s very much a two-way trade,” she said.
“We will watch the outcome very carefully for its impact on tax and trade, for the impact on the rest of Europe, Ukraine, the Middle East…there’s a lot at stake, and it’s important.
“But we will plan either way, and we will engage either way – and in the best way for Ireland.”
