Many of our politicians are divorced from reality. While women are portrayed as having a much harder life, it is a fact that roughly four times as many men take their own lives as women. The government is pushing mental health and women are being sent to work places to lecture men on mental health. However, in many instances, their problem has nothing to do with their minds but the pressures on them and the way they are treated. It certainly does not help when politicians go on about white privileged males.
The word “privilege” is regularly misused or misapplied. The word is selectively applied to denigrate certain people. When privilege is applied only to things like wealth and advantages of a social class, relatively few of us have this. However, a poor person, who grows up in a caring and stable family, who works hard and succeeds is deservedly privileged and should be admired. That person is very different from someone who grows up a spoilt brat who inherits wealth and power. I do not expect our politicians to apply their minds to reason about such things.
i suppose the many black, asian, arab etc billionaires and millionaires are not privilidged. Privilidge applies to the wealthy in this day and age. Everyone else is a Pawn or a pauper. What is native Irish? Someone born in Ireland? Quite a large percentage of that group are not white so Irishness if there is even such a concept has nothing to do with skin colour. Women are portrayed as having it really rough – not so white men. A recent report in the US, and I believe the numbers are similar here, is that four times as many men commit suicide as women. There is something ironic that our government is paying women to go and speak to men about mental health problems when they do not appreciate the pressures men are under – most of which have nothing to do with mental health. So many of our politicians are divorced from reality.
I think few of these ‘Social Justice Warriors’ have a realistic plan to improve matters. They just complain fashionably and endlessly about ‘white, able-bodied, settled male/cisgendered/lesbian/trans privilege’ or whatever new category can be added to the mix. Objective reality doesn’t come into it. There’s a whole industry that’s running on this hot air and it’s heading rapidly down a cul-de-sac. They don’t appear to have any idea of what social justice is or care less about it, with their comfortable jobs in Dáil Éireann, a record number of homeless people outside in the freezing streets and their properties reaching evermore inflated values due to their carefully considered and deliberated housing policies. All they achieve with this hypocritical nonsense is to drive more people into the arms of the far-right. Our Universities are complicit in this, training up the new generations of hot air balloons.
