It’s been a strange couple of days on the internet, thanks to events in the States. On Monday, former US Marine Daniel Penny was found not guilty after lengthy legal proceedings, sparked by his decision to intervene on a New York Subway train last year, placing 30-year-old Jordan Neely, who was harassing and intimidating passengers by all accounts, in a chokehold. Mr Neely subsequently died.
Similarly on Monday, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, just days after the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson – of which Mangione stands accused. This case has all the makings of a generational crime epic – a la OJ Simpson, if not bigger – because of the public involvement every step of the way and the strange details coming to light.
