Chronic cannabis smoker with schizophrenia who ripped hair from Garda’s head jailed.
A man who has schizophrenia was sentenced to 20 months in jail after he attacked a female Garda and ripped a clump of hair out of her scalp.
The Sunday World reported that Leitrim man Domhnall Cosgrave (38) violently attacked the Garda but will likely walk out of jail in about three weeks on account of time already served in custody.
A prosecuting Garda told Laoise District Court that on April 17, 2023 Cosgrave had been arrested in Galway under the mental treatment act and brought to the district court in Castlebar as this was the only court available at the time.
A doctor who examined him told Gardaí he was fit to be released however he came to the attention of Gardaí the following day and was arrested again.
The attack took place in view of a sitting judge at Castlebar courthouse on April 18, 2023 where Cosgrave grabbed Garda Katie Conlon by her hair and caused her to fall to the ground where she hit her head.
He was also charged with the separate offence of having kicked out at Garda Conlon.
The court heard that she suffers from ongoing physical pain in her neck since the incident which also caused her psychological trauma.
Medical evidence given to the court said that Cosgrave has since been diagnosed with schizophrenia. The court also heard that he has been unemployed since 2017 and is a chronic cannabis smoker.
Sitting judge Eoin Garavan expressed concern about Cosgrave’s attitude towards what he had done saying that during interviews he had denied assaulting Garda Conlon and attempted to minimise what had taken place.
Fraudster who scammed 18 international students out of almost €30,000 jailed.
36-year-old fraudster Raul Rodriguez Ramirez, who scammed 18 international students whom he had promised to help study abroad in Ireland, has been jailed.
Ramirez used the money he scammed from the would be langage students to fund a Mexican restaurant in Dublin which went under during the pandemic.
The court heard that the victims were from countries such as Japan, South Korea, Mexico, and Belgium.
Judge Orla Crowe sitting at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that Rameriz has so far paid back just over 18,000 of the money he defrauded but that he is currently financially unable to pay any more at present.
The amounts taken from the victims who ranged in age between their 20s and 30s were between €3,800 to €1,292.
Rameriz was sentenced to nine months in jail.
Suspended sentence for man who dragged ex girlfriend along road
A man who dragged his ex girlfriend along a road in what was described as a ‘horrific’ attack has received a conditionally suspended sentence of 21 months.
Tom Tuite reported that 33-year-old William Galvin who has an address at Cloonloughlin, Mount Talbot, Co. Roscommon pleaded guilty to assault causing harm in respect of the woman he had been seeing for eight weeks at the time of the assault.
Mullingar Circuit Court heard that in 2021 the woman had gone to Galvin’s home after becoming aware that a Dyson hoover had been removed from her house to which Galvin had a key.
When she went to remove the hoover from his home, the father of three grabbed it and amidst the ensuing alteration dragged her along the road causing her to suffer from friction burns on her back as well as wounding her knees and hands.
The court heard that the hoover was taken from the victim’s home around two weeks after her relationship with Galvin had ended although he had retained the key to the property.
The woman also reported a number of other items of jewellery missing from the house.
The victim said former drug user Galvin had said he would treat her like a dog during the attack which presiding Judge Keenan Johnson described as “absolutely despicable” but noted the guilty plea as well the victim’s full recovery.
Galvin’s prison sentence was suspended on condition that he not reoffend for a period of 5 years, that he have no contact with the victim or her family.
Additionally he must submit to supervision by the Probation Service for a period of 18 months, follow all directions given about his addiction and mental health issues.
He must also take all medications prescribed to him as directed by doctors, and must pay €7,530 in compensation to the woman over the next three years.
Man charged in relation to alleged attack on woman in Cork
28-year-old Chinonso Igboanusi who has no fixed abode appeared before Cork District Court after being arrested and charged in relation to the sexual assault of a woman.
Garda Thomas McKenna gave evidence that Igboanusi’s arrest on charges of sexual assault, common assault (under Section 2 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act), as well as obstruction of a garda.
The Irish Examiner reported that while Gardaí were on patrol on Oliver Plunkett Street they were approached by a man shortly after 11am on the 19th of June who said he was in pursuit of a man who he accused of sexually assaulting his partner.
The man said that he had managed to get a photo of the alleged assailant on his phone.
It was also reported that Igboanusi made unusual gestures with his arms and laughed to himself, occasionally putting his hands to his mount seemingly as a gesture to himself to remain quiet.
He was remanded in custody with his solicitor requesting that he undergo psychiatric evaluation at that time.
Commenting on his client’s mental state, solicitor Eddie Burke said, “I don’t think he is fit to deal with this. I have concerns about his mental health — serious concerns. This man is not fit to deal with the matter because of his mental state.”
