Google any variant of the question, ‘Why are people having fewer children’ and the answer you’ll come across most often will be some variant of ‘because it’s so expensive’. Having followed the conversation surrounding this topic for some years now, I’ve observed that it’s the reason most likely to be cited in casual conversation, by columnists and whoever else turns their hand to the topic.
The thing is, I don’t think it’s true.
