Swedish Prime Minister: Mass stabbing by Afghan migrant “not a migration issue”

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven has said that a recent mass stabbing of 7 people by an Afghan migrant is “not a migration issue” after calls for better border control.

The attack, which took place in Vetlanda, Sweden, left 7 stabbed and 3 with potentially life-threatening injuries. After police arrived on the scene, the attacker was shot in the leg and taken to hospital.

According to Swedish news outlet SVT, the attacker was a 22-year-old Afghan male who came to Sweden in 2016. He had previous drug convictions and was known to police.

Following the attack, the nationalist Sweden Democrats called on the government to impose an immigration ban, arguing that the current border control policy has an adverse effect on the Swedish culture and economy.

“This is not a migration issue that the Sweden Democrats want to make it,” said Prime Minister Stefan Löfven in an interview with Nyheter Idag.

“Now we have a very serious incident in Vetlanda. Where innocent people are hurt, where their relatives are deeply worried.”

The perpetrator was awaiting an extension on his residence permit to stay in Sweden at the time of the attack. According to the Swedish Migration Board, no final decision has been made yet on whether he should be allowed to stay. Police say they have not ruled out a terror motive.
