On the depressingly regular occasions when there’s some horrendous crime committed against a woman in Ireland, we tend to be treated to what I call “a national conversation about Irish men”.
This conversation generally goes something like this: For the betterment of all womankind, Irish men must be better human beings, less violent, less rapaciously sexual, and altogether more sensitive. Occasionally it will then transpire that the offending male was a foreigner, and the conversation will then dry up as quickly as it begins, because the one thing we can never have in Ireland is a “national conversation about foreign men”.
