In the aftermath of the local and European elections, it seems at least likely that the next Dáil will see a Government of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, plus one other party. The Green Party proved reasonably resilient last weekend, but it still lost half it’s council seats and both MEPs, and a similar result in a general election would see its parliamentary party at least halved, likely leaving its Government partners looking for a new set of buddies in coalition.
The alternative Government – some kind of Sinn Fein led arrangement encompassing perhaps Fianna Fáil and Labour and the Social Democrats – looks less likely with each passing opinion poll. But no outcome is impossible.
