The weekly roundup comes a day early this week, for two reasons: First, I’m taking the day off tomorrow, because marathon election counts are time-consuming for those of us who write about them, let alone for counters and candidates, and I’ve a lot of personal stuff that’s piled up that needs taking care of. Second, because by the time you’ve read this I’ll have been on Virgin Media’s Tonight show last night to talk about the elections and their outcome. If you’ve been following along all week, then you probably have a fair idea about some of the things I said.
Of course it now seems very likely that this will not be the last election in which we vote in 2024. Government politicians will insist, in public, that the election will not be held until next year, but they’re almost certainly fibbing. Or, if they’re not fibbing, they will be persuaded of their folly.
