“Gaslighting” is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as follows: “to psychologically manipulate (a person) usually over an extended period of time so that the victim questions the validity of their own thoughts, perception of reality, or memories and experiences confusion”.
Usually, the term is used in relation to abusive romantic relationships: The husband who persistently undermines his wife’s confidence by challenging her memories or perceptions of reality or trust in her friends. But the term can also be used, I think, to describe the current government’s electoral strategy on immigration.
