If an alien landed in Ireland and decided to learn our history exclusively through Irish cinema, he would probably conclude that for the last thousand years we have done little except starve, get beaten by priests, get shot by the British, get beaten by priests again, emigrate, get shot by the British again, and then sit moodily beside the Atlantic contemplating the sheer misery of it all.
We make very good films about being miserable.
