The Department of Justice has confirmed to Gript that 8,311 illegal immigrants have applied for a government amnesty which would allow them to stay indefinitely in the country. Successful applicants will have full access to the Irish labour market and will later be able to, should they wish, apply for citizenship.
The Regularisation of Long-Term Undocumented Migrants Scheme opened for applications on the 31st of January 2022, and closed six months later on the 31st of July. The Department, and Minister for Justice Helen McEntee, who launched the scheme, has repeatedly said that the scheme was/is not an amnesty for illegal immigrants, but rather a “once-in-a-generation opportunity for people who are undocumented in the State to make an application to regularise their position, if they met the scheme’s clearly defined criteria.”
