The latest Sinn Fein pivot, this time their decision to support the British Government’s ban on the use of puberty blockers on gender-confused teenagers, is telling. The late Martin McGuinness claimed of Sinn Fein that “we are not a single-issue party”. I think Sinn Fein have shown once again that they are, at heart, a single issue party. Their commitment on all other issues remains an optional extra.
To recap first on the puberty blockers, there has been a temporary ban on the use of these drugs in Britain following the Cass report earlier this year which found that very many gender-confused children and young people were being too readily medicated to “confirm” their preferred, or imagined, gender identity. That ban, begun by the Tories, has been kept on by Labour and this, in turn, has forced the Northern Ireland Executive to make a decision on whether or not to implement the ban there.
