A report by Ireland’s national curriculum body has claimed that cousin marriage is common within the Traveller community, but stresses that while it may be “controversial”, marrying your cousin is actually a “cultural norm” in many societies.
The claims are contained within a National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) research document which was originally published in 2023, but was highlighted this week as part of a newly released intercultural education toolkit for schools.
