The luddite environmentalist group Extinction Rebellion has declared that “nature is queer,” that “trees can be both male and female and change sex,” and that “the huge range of biodiversity is echoed in human diversity.”
The statement was released following a rally in Helsinki by Extinction Rebellion Finland. That rally demanded “ecosocial justice” and the creation of an “eco queer utopia.” Extinction Rebellion Finland also stated that “nature is queer! Biodiversity includes human diversity.”
Public reaction to the statement was mixed, with many users taking to Twitter to mock Extinction Rebellion for their apparent inability to discern people from flora such as trees and moss. Other members of the public were simply confused as to how trees, not being sapient, could have gender identities and/or be queer.
