In a quite terrible week, we learnt of the English woman Lily Phillips, who recently had sex with 101 men in a single day.
The issue here is not Phillips, who is clearly deranged, but the men: not just why but also how? Did they not see poor Lily was a victim who needed protecting? How could all those men possibly be serially aroused by the prospect of having sex with such a troubled woman? The same question, but now utterly criminal, next emerged in the monstrous case in Avignon in France where Dominique Pelicot not merely repeatedly raped his own drug-dosed wife, Gisele, but also for a full decade invited 83 other men to do so, filming them in the process. Of these, fifty-one went on trial, and last week all but one was found guilty, the single exception being found guilty of raping his own wife. Unparalleled evils were perpetrated upon poor Gisele, and not by programmed neo-Nazi zealots but by the ordinary men of Avignon, where there clearly is bridge that leads to Dante’s Seventh Circle of Hell, and in which the damned are rightly immersed in boiling blood for all eternity.
