While the UK and the USA fretted over whether they should permit Ukraine to fire their jointly-made Storm Shadow cruise missile into Russia, in London, a Ghanaian primary school teacher, Ernestina Quainoo was convicted of smuggling a 14-year-old slave-girl into Britain. Uncontrolled immigration has brought many joys to British life, but surely teen-slavery is one of its more unexpected cultural treasures.
Of course, the UK and the US governments were worried about other things when the London court gave the fair Mrs Quainoo merely a suspended sentence for importing a she-chattel. Those in essence were, how far should they go in enabling Ukraine kill Russians? The most important aspect of this question is that it would have made absolutely no sense four years ago during the last presidential race. Now it could lead to a world-wide conflagration, so making the outcome of last weekend’s presidential debate pretty irrelevant.
