Tottenham Hotspur have announced their Portugese manager Jose Mourinho has been sacked by chairman Daniel Levy.
Jose Mourinho’s year has gone from bad to worse after the struggling London club announced his time at Tottenham is up.
The club looks set to miss out on a top four finish for the second year in a row with Mourinho at the helm, in what has been a disappointing season for all involved.
Replacing Mauricio Pochettino in 2019, after the Argentine guided Tottenham to a Champions League final against Liverpool, Jose Mourinho’s spell in charge was marked by underachievement and frustration, failing to find the squad needed to supplement the prowess of star players like Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.
The former Porto manager and assistant to Bobby Robinson at Barcelona was today removed, along with his backroom team, before winning even one trophy, less than a week before the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City.
With players like Dele Alli and the recently returned Gareth Bale struggling to find a place in his team, the pressure on Mourinho to find his best 11 was apparent throughout his time at Spurs, leading many commentators like Roy Keane to accuse the club of being “too soft” to push for a Premier League title.
Graeme Souness said he was “surprised” at the timing of Mourinho’s sacking, and that Mourinho may have had a falling out with a group of players.
“I think he’s become so frustrated with some of the players, you know in that situation, I’ve been there myself where you get so frustrated,” Souness told Sky Sports News.
“You’ve tried everything, you end up having harsh words and falling out with them, and then if you follow up with one you end up falling out with four or five if not more.
“That old chestnut ends up getting back to the decision makers, that he’s falling out with the dressing room, and then there’s only one outcome – that’s the manager to go.”
