Minister Catherine Martin corrected in X’s Community Notes on referendum claim

Minister Catherine Martin has been corrected in X’s Community Notes for her assertion that the Irish Constitution says that a woman’s place is in the home. The correction points out that Supreme Court Judge Marie Baker, Chair of the Electoral Commission, has clarified that the Constitution makes no such statement.

The Culture Minister had posted on X calling for a YesYes vote in the upcoming March 8th referendums on family and care. She said “it’s not reflective of today’s society for our constitution to say that a woman’s place is in the home.”

However, as pointed out in the Community Notes this claim had been corrected by the Chair of the Electoral Commission Marie Baker – and Supreme Court judge – who spelt out that the case law of the Supreme Court had clarified that the Constitution did not say a woman’s place is in the home.

Justice Baker clarified that the Constitution says that mothers provide an “important support” to society and shouldn’t “have to go out to work” due to “economic necessity.”

The incorrect claim had been made by Yes campaigners such as the National Women’s Council of Ireland and by Minister Roderic O’Gorman after the referendums had been announced, but they have not publicly sought to correct their error, despite concerns around misinformation in the referendum being raised repeatedly.

Last month, Elon Musk told Gript’s Ben Scallan that the Community Notes function on X meant that users could add clarifying responses to contentious tweets in a way that did not happen in newspapers.

“Who is deciding what is misinformation and disinformation?” he asked. “The point is to have an open and clear debate – and if something is misinformation or disinformation, to provide a rebuttal, that’s the best way, in open debate.”

There was a strong reaction on X to the correction of the Minister’s claim.

“The Constitution does NOT, repeat NOT, say that ‘a woman’s place is in the home.’ Try reading the article you are so eager to delete,” wrote Prof Ger Casey.

Others described the claim as “disinformation”, while several posts pointed to the fact that Minister Martin had last year set up a group tasked with fighting misinformation and disinformation and charged with developing a National Counter Disinformation Strategy to combat false information.

“The constitution doesn’t say a women’s place is “in the home” It defines & recognises the value of mothers rearing children in the context of the value that provides to the continued well-being of the state. Honestly cannot think of any benevolent reason to campaign to remove it,” said one commentator.

Another tagged the Electoral Commission, saying “please investigate the spreading of misinformation by govt ministers. It is in direct contradiction to Justice Baker’s clarification. Art 41.2 does not say a woman’s place is in the home!”

The Green Party says the party “is equally determined to eliminate out-dated language from the Constitution and remove the idea that women should be limited to specific fields or that they ‘belong’ in certain areas. The party is supporting a Yes vote to ensure people who care for family members get full recognition of the important work they perform and the benefit society receives from it.”

Catherine Martin, the Orwellian Culture Minister. Martin’s ilk pushed their same sex marriage malarkey hard but such marriages (sic) remain a tiny minority with huge divorce and domestic violence rates. Martin, O’Gorman and their ilk are good at social destruction but they have nothing constructive to offer. the sooner the Greens and their SF/FF/FG/Lab//SD fellow grifters exit the political stage forever the better for those Irish who manage to survive.

No No.1 votes for incumbents. It’s the only way.
Or, as the Mandalorian would say, “This is the way”.
The STV system is very powerful if only we would use it right to hold them accountable.

When will the People of Ireland wake from their lethargy and realise this Regime is their Enemy and does not have the interest of the Irish People as their concern.
Varadkar is a documented WEF stooge and was ‘placed’ in the FG leadership by that influence, to carry out their Globalist agenda to deliver Ireland for exploitaion. His Regimes criminality is covered by the despicable corrupted Irish Media.
Clear them all out. Vote, NO&NO in the Referendums.

Love this functionality in X. Sick & tired of people in supposed positions of responsibility in Government, NGO’s & the media who continue to make blatantly incorrect & manipulative statements & then disable the adding commentary functionality so nobody else can comment or correct the lies & false statements. This lie parroted by Martin wasn’t just an unintentional mistake , the position has been clarified on numerous occasions so its a deliberate & pre-mediated attempt to try to fool the Irish electorate & pull the wool over their eyes. Surely there is a mechanism either in law or under within the powers of the electoral commission to disqualify Martin, O’Gorman & many other ministers & their parties from campaigning given their continued & blatant lies & misrepresentation of our constitution. Surely if a yes vote happens & its clear that the government campaign was based on lies & misrepresentation, there is a case to put a temporary block on amending the constitution until such time as a second vote is held based on fact.

Anyone who cannot use language in a clear, concise, coherent and cohesive way does not have the logical and reasoning skills to be a competent politician. Unfortunately this is not part of the list of criteria to qualify to become an Irish politician.

Politics is one of the few categories where no Academic or practical skill training is required. Thus it mainly attracts those who have failed in the real world of Industry and commerce
It draws most of its adherents from the cast -offs of other fields ,where the ability to deceive, lie and promise with a false sincerity is the greatest qualification for advancement . Ergo, the greatest convincing liars reach the pinnacle of the dung heap that is Irish politics.
This explains the whiff of decay around Leinster House and the rats sharing the RTE canteen with their 2 legged cousins.

Perhaps we need politicians who are holding down productive jobs to give up a day a week and get the business done quickly. They could then concentrate on what is really essential and get to the point in discussions. They would also have far less time to squander tax revenue.

In contrast to Vlad. I think he is a chess player. I would not necessarily trust, but his civil and measured responses to the Carlson interview showed a shrewd politician

Funny how disinformation is only disinformation if it comes from somebody outside of government and their paid lackeys in the media. Anyone else is the ‘far right’ and needs to go to prison for hate speech or some other trumped up charges. Vote these useless people out, and never let them near power again, or maybe revolution is the only way?

Would you support a decision by Ireland to copy the UK's "Rwanda Plan", under which asylum seekers are sent to the safe - but third world - African country instead of being allowed to remain here?
