A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to 6 months in jail by a court in the state of New York in relation to the creation of deep fake pornographic images of as many as 40 of his former classmates.
Patrick Carey, a former student of MacArthur High School in Levittown, New York was handed the six month sentence only after he was found guilty of sharing a real naked photo of an underage girl.
The state of New York currently does not have laws against the creation of deep fake porn where advanced AI technology is used to create realistic images.
Carey had used the girls’s selfies to photoshop their faces onto the bodies of women depicted in pornographic encounters.
One of his victims said she believes he created the images to “humiliate” her and the 39 other victims who were identified by the District Attorney.
Last August the Irish Mirror reported that thousands of images of Irish girls were being used to create explicit images online.
Tech expert Dan Purcell said deep fake porn is a “major issue and there’s no sign of it slowing down”.
Purcell reportedly took down an online database containing hundreds of thousands of images of Irish women which were used for “revenge porn”.
“Technology has advanced so quickly that it’s almost impossible to determine if the material is manipulated,” he said.
Purcell, who is the CEO of anti-piracy and privacy protection service Ceartas, said the problem “isn’t going to go away” and that it’s only going to “get worse”.
