A man in his 50s, arrested after a security incident at Dublin’s Connolly Station earlier this week, has been released without charge by Gardaí.
Gardaí have said that investigations remain ongoing and that a file will be submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
At approximately 6:20 pm yesterday evening, Gardaí received a report of a male passenger on a commuter train arriving at Connolly Station, Dublin, who was observed with a suspected firearm.
The individual did not make any threats toward other passengers onboard according to police.
An Garda Síochána launched a swift and large-scale response, including multiple Garda Armed Response Units from Dublin City. The man in his 50s was arrested at the scene and was detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939, at a Garda station in the Dublin Region until his release today.
The suspected firearm was seized at the scene and, according to police, will undergo a full technical examination to determine its legality under Irish law.
As a precaution, Gardaí evacuated Connolly Station yesterday evening and conducted a thorough security sweep of both the station and the train involved.
There being no further public safety concerns, the station has since reopened.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Store Garda Station at 01 666 8000, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
“An Garda Síochána is aware of commentary in circulation online in relation to this incident which contains misinformation, disinformation and fake news,” the Gardaí said in a statement yesterday.
“Once again, An Garda Síochána appeal to the public to independently verify any information that is shared on social media and/or sent through messaging sharing apps.”
