There is a familiar explanation for the growing distrust of experts. People have become ignorant. Social media has allowed misinformation to flourish. Populist politicians have encouraged ordinary citizens to reject inconvenient facts.
If only the public listened more carefully to scientists, economists and other credentialled authorities, we are told, many of our problems would disappear.
