Lisa Smith Guilty of ISIS Membership

Former member of the Irish Defence Forces Lisa Smith has been found guilty of membership of the Islamic State terrorist organisation.

Smith, who converted to Islam, alledgedly went to Syria after Islamic cleric Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi called on Muslims to rally support for the Islamic State. The prosecution claimed that Smith had emigrated to Syria in order to aid in the establishment of an ‘Islamic Caliphate’.

RTÉ reported that the 40 year old mother of one had pleaded her innocence denying membership of the terrorist organization between 28 October 2015 and 1 December 2019. In her defense she said she had followed a ‘religious obligation’.

Prosecuting counsel Sean Gillane said Smith had enveloped herself in the black flag of IS.

Adding that the court could not ignore that Smith traveled thousands of kilometers, having knowledge about the activities of the terrorist organisation that was “up to its neck in blood”.

She was also accused of trying to wire €800 to fund the Islamic State through John Georgelas, a member of ISIS,  in 2015.

The Independent reported that Justice Tony Hunt announced the guilty verdict,  reached by a three judge non-jury court after a nine week trial, saying that there was “no doubt” that Georgelas was a member of IS at the time the financial transfer was made.

The court is now to discuss whether Smith will be given bail prior to sentencing.
