The building housing the Houses of the Oireachtas – presently known as Leinster House – is to be re-named “Google ChromeHouse” as part of a new multi-year title sponsorship agreement between the American Internet Giant and the Irish Government.
The announcement was made this morning after prolonged talks between the department of Finance and Google executives in recent days. It is understood that the deal will not involve any transfer of funds from google – which would be illegal under international law – but will instead take the form of “assistance” to the state by Google.
Minister of Finance Paschal Donoghue welcomed the deal this morning saying that it represented a “new stage” in the relationship between multinational companies and Ireland. “Ireland and Google have worked hand in hand now for many years, and it seemed to make sense for both sides to take the relationship to the next level. For Google that means a permanent association with “brand Ireland”, which is recognised around the world. For Ireland, it means better integration between our Government, and officials, and the decision makers in Google, so that we can better understand their needs on a daily basis”.
“For example,”, a department of finance spokesperson said, “Irish Government content will now get pride of place across all google internet properties. Our flagship national talk show, the Late Late Show will now be shown live and in real time around the globe on YouTube, and promoted. And, just as we have representation in the European Union, we have secured a permanent seat on the board of Google for an Irish politician”.
At the time of writing, former Health Minister Simon Harris is considered to be the frontrunning candidate to become Ireland’s first official representative to the company.
It is understood that Leinster House staff will also receive free training at Google Headquarters in California as part of the deal on topics like diversity, inclusion, and the evolving nature of free speech.
“From our point of view this historic sponsorship agreement was just a natural fit”, a google spokesman was reported as saying.
“Ireland has long been the model Google nation. It is a progressive, tolerant, capitalist society – but with extra shamrocks and Guinness. What’s not to like?”
“As part of this agreement Google advisors will be made available – free of charge – to every Senior Irish Official, to provide the world class guidance and advice that only a company like ours can provide”.
It is understood that several other Multinational Companies were in the running for the title sponsorship deal, but were not able to compete with the Google offer. However, talks to rename Aras an Uachtarán “The Presidential MetaVerse” are understood to be at an advanced stage.
The actual process of renaming Leinster House is not expected to begin until later this year, with the official opening – and a new paint scheme in the colours of Google Chrome™ – expected to be unveiled exactly one year from today, on April 1st 2023.
