Italian Eurovision winner denies cocaine use, offers to do voluntary drug test

The lead singer of the Italian band who won the 2021 Eurovision has denied taking cocaine after fans noticed footage of him lowering his nose towards the table during the contest.

Damiano David of the winning Italian band Måneskin vehemently rejected the allegation during a press conference, saying “I don’t use drugs. Please, guys. Don’t say that really, no cocaine.”

Speculation began after footage was noticed of the band celebrating their win and the lead singer leaning over the table, his face slightly obscured by bottles during the live broadcast.

David alleges that he was simply moving some debris off the table after guitarist Thomas Raggi broke a glass, rather than snorting anything.

“The band, their management and head of delegation have informed us that no drugs were present in the Green Room and explained that a glass was broken at their table and it was being cleared by the singer,” said the Eurovision in a statement.

“The EBU can confirm broken glass was found after an on site check. We are still looking at footage carefully and will update with further information in due course.”

Måneskin also reacted to the allegations on social media.

“We are really shocked about what some people are saying about Damiano doing drugs,” the band said in a statement on Instagram. “We really are AGAINST drugs and we never used cocaine. We are ready to get tested, because we have nothing to hide.”

The band was the first Italian act to win the song contest since 1990.
